What I Do: Connecting the Digital Health Ecosystem
As a software developer at metricHEALTH, my role centers around building the digital infrastructure that makes modern healthcare possible. Much of my work involves creating connections—between different healthcare systems, between patients and providers, and between data and actionable insights.
Building Secure Healthcare Applications
Healthcare technology comes with unique challenges, primarily around privacy and security. When you’re dealing with sensitive patient information, every piece of code needs to meet strict industry standards. I work extensively with healthcare compliance protocols, ensuring that our systems not only function well but also protect patient privacy at every step.
This involves implementing robust security measures like encryption (think of it as creating unbreakable digital locks for patient data) and building authentication systems that verify user identities while maintaining ease of use for healthcare providers.
Creating Seamless System Integration
One of the biggest challenges in healthcare is that different systems often don’t communicate well with each other. Imagine if your doctor’s electronic health record system couldn’t share information with the lab that processes your blood work, or if your pharmacy couldn’t access your prescription history.
I spend significant time building APIs—essentially digital translators that allow different healthcare systems to share information securely and efficiently. This work ensures that patient information flows smoothly between systems while maintaining strict privacy standards.
Automation and Quality Assurance
In healthcare, reliability isn’t just important—it’s critical. I develop automated testing systems that continuously check our software for potential issues before they can affect real users. Think of it as having a digital quality control team that works 24/7 to ensure everything runs smoothly.
I also create comprehensive documentation and monitoring systems that help our team maintain and improve our solutions over time.
Recognition: Mayor’s Award for Research and Innovation
In November 2024, our team’s efforts were recognized when metricHEALTH received the Mayor’s Award for Research and Innovation from the City of Barrie. Standing alongside Georgian College’s Research and Innovation Department to receive this honor was both humbling and validating.
This recognition reflects our team’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in healthcare technology. Working as part of what we affectionately call “The Three Musketeers” development team, we’ve tackled complex challenges with creativity, collaboration, and a shared passion for making healthcare better.
